Narain Singh, Bhai
A Nankana Sahib Martyr (1875-1921)
Who fell a victim in the violence at Nankana Sahib in 1921, was the son of Bhai Jawahar Singh and Mata Chandi of village Lahuke, in Amritsar district. In 1890, he received the rites of Khalsa initiation at the hands of Baba Savaia Singh of Hoti-Mardan. In 1894, the family moved to Chakk No. 75 Lahuke in Lyallpur district. During the First Great War (1914-18), Narain Singh enlisted and served in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) for about three years. Returning to India, he joined the ranks of the Akal1 reformers. On 20 February 1921 he was one of the Jatha led by Bhai Ishar Singh Jathedar which reached Nankana Sahib too late to join the main Dharovali jatha and enter Gurdwara Janam Asthan. Many of them, however, tried to enter from the southern gate and got killed there; Bhai Narain Singh was one of them.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee settled upon his widow a pension of Rs 80 and discharged the debts of the family.
