BATHINDA
Bhatinda is one of the oldest towns in the state and has many historical associations. There is an ancient fort, which is estimated to have been in existence for the last 1800 years. It was here on this fort that ill starred queen Razia Sultan the daughter of King Altmah and the first women to assume the throne in India was first Incarcerated on her defeat and dethroned.
Bhatinda fort is a war fort situated on a high ancient mount. The bricks used here are said to date back to Kushan period when emperor Kanishka ruled over India. Once river Satluj flowed near the fort.
It was again in the jungles of Bhatinda that Guru Gobind Singh Ji is reputed to have once challenged and fought the mighty Mughal forces. This town also played a prominent role in freedom Struggle of the country and against the autocratic administration of the then Princely rulers.
It is one of the biggest food grain and cotton market in northern India. the area around Bhatinda has become a large grape growing area.
Bathinda is a leading railway junction. The American International firm PEPSI is processing horticulture products grown here.
Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Or Talwandi Sabo:
Also known as ‘Guru Kashi’, Guru Gobind Singh Ji recompiled Guru Granth Sahib here. The fair of Baishakhi of dancing devotees and display of martial arts, held here for 2day in April has been recognized as a national fair.
Maisar Khana:
It is famous for its Bhagwati Mandir known for fulfilling wishes. A largely attended religious fair is held here twice a year.
Mazaar of Peer Haji Rattan:
Situated between the Civil Hospital and Grain Market. Legend goes that as Ambassador of Raja Bhoj, Baba Haji Rattan visited Mecca and on return to India, he settled in meditation at Bhatinda. The place is hallowed by the visit of Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Gobind Singh.
