GURDWARA SAHIB TAMPIN, NEGERI SEMBILAN

The first Sikhs arrived in Tampin around the late 1920’s. Most of them were employed as policemen, railway workers, bus and lorry drivers, cattle owners or rubber estate workers. Their religious ceremonies and prayer needs were taken care of by the neighbouring Gurdwaras of Malacca or Seremban.
It was only on 12th July 1967 that the present site of the Gurdwara Sahib Tampin was obtained at a rental of RM70.00 a month. Punjabi classes were also conducted in the Gurdwara Sahib premises by Giani Gamdoor Singh. On 18th September 1967, the first Parkash of the Holy Book, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, was held in the Gurdwara Sahib Tampin. The first Nishan Sahib di Salami was held on the 23rd September 1967 in the presence of Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji of Malacca.
On the 8′ December 1967, the land on which the Gurdwara Sahib was situated was purchased from its owner for RM17,500.00. Out of this amount, RM10,000.00 was donated by Gurdwara Sahib Malacca.
At the Annual General Meeting on 27th October 1968, the Management Committee of the Gurdwara Sahib Tampin adopted a new constitution and by-laws for its management. At the same time, it allowed Sikh residents from Gemas, Batang Malacca, Alor Gajah and Rembau to become members with the same rights as the Sikh sangat of Tampin.
In 1968, part of the land adjoining the Gurdwara Sahib Tampin land was purchased for RM22,000.00.
In 1995, it was decided that a new double storey Gurdwara Sahib building be constructed. Dato Mahima Singh Dhaliwal of Seremban laid the foundation stone on 24th November 1996. The cost of the new Gurdwara Sahib Tampin building came to RM1,500.000.00. The new Gurdwara Sahib building was officially declared open on 15th November 1998 by the Panj Piyarae.
There are presently about 30 Sikh families in the Tampin area who participate in the religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib.
Giani Gamdoor Singh served as a Granthi in this Gurdwara Sahib from 1967 to 1972, Giani Mehar Singh, Village Dohda Kaunti, Moga, from 1972 to 1983, Giani Ajmer Singh from 1983 to 1990, Giani Satnam Singh from 1990 to 1995 and Giani Gurbachan Singh from 1995 to 2002.
The Management Committee comprises of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and their assistants as well as five committee members.
There are two rooms in this Gurdwara Sahib that may be used by Sikh visitors.
The normal weekly prayers are held on Sunday mornings at 9.00a.m.
