Guru Ji was a great social reformer. Guru ji eliminated class distrinction through the institututions of Sangat and Pangat. No one could gain an audience without first partaking of food in Guru-ka-Kangar. Guru Ji stood for the emancipation of women. Guru Ji forbade the practice of pardha, the veiling of women.Guru Ji prohibited ‘syapa’, the beating of breasts by women on the death of a relative., instead he exhorted all to sing Gods praises and accept his will. Guru Ji forbade the practice of ‘sati’, in which widows burnt themselves on the funeral pyres of their dead husbands.
